About me:

I am a physician-scientist with a career dedicated to infectious diseases, critical care, and translational research, working to advance science and improve clinical outcomes globally, with a particular focus on Colombia and Latin America.

I currently serve as Distinguished Professor of Infectious Diseases at the School of Medicine, Universidad de La Sabana in Colombia, where I also lead the Unisabana Center for Translational Science (UCTS)—an interdisciplinary research centre focused on translating scientific discoveries into clinical solutions. I also hold a clinical and academic role at the Clínica Universidad de La Sabana, a university hospital committed to research, education, and high-quality patient care. In addition, I work as a Researcher and Scientific Leadership Manager at the University of Oxford, contributing to international research coordination, capacity building, and scientific leadership in critical illness and infectious diseases.

I hold an MSc in International Health and Tropical Medicine from the University of Oxford and a PhD in Translational Science from the University of Texas. My academic training supports a broad research agenda that spans molecular biology, clinical trials, and health systems research.

I have led multiple randomised controlled trials and multicentre observational studies, not only in Colombia and Latin America, but also as part of global research collaborations. I actively participate in international research platforms such as REMAP-CAP, ANDROMEDA SHOCK, and LIVEN (Latin American Intensive Care Network), contributing to collective efforts to address pneumonia, sepsis, and other emerging infectious threats.

To date, I have authored over 160 peer-reviewed publications, many in top-tier journals, and I mentor a growing number of PhD and MSc students working on projects that explore pathogen biology, host immune responses, antimicrobial resistance, and long-term outcomes of infectious diseases.

Beyond my research, I serve as an Associate Editor for several international journals and as an International Advisor to The Lancet Microbe. I also collaborate with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) to support the development of clinical trial capacity in Latin America and promote equitable access to research and preparedness for future pandemics.

My work is grounded in a commitment to scientific excellence, regional leadership, and global collaboration. I aim to bridge the gap between research and real-world impact, ensuring that high-quality, evidence-based care reaches the populations who need it most, both in Latin America and around the world.
